Prescription Drugs
02:19
|
|||
My head is all right--it’s my heart that needs some help
It’s in a bad way, leagues out of its depth
Nobody knows the trouble I’ve seen
Prescription drugs
When there’s a problem no-one knows to solve
When towers of baleful clouds shadow over all
I know the perfect remedy
Prescription drugs
Things work out in ways you can’t foresee
All the things you’ve done and said determine who you’ll be
But I know how you can get you free

Goners
02:49
|
|||
“What was that noise in the basement?” she asks, descending the stair
An ominous rattle, a cold draft caresses her hair
She gives a start when there comes a violent slam
And the trapdoor shuts up like a clam
Then she’s a goner, like many before
A goner, she’ll never open that door
After senior prom he drives back from his girlfriend’s dad’s place
Her text message, “I love you; had a great time” illumines his face
So he doesn’t notice he’s drifting into the wrong lane
But he reads her text over as he lies in unimaginable pain
And then he’s a goner, most tragic of all
A goner, though they would’ve broke up come Fall
Mrs. Sanders positions her ceramic figurine of
An anthropomorphosized rabbit with a baseball and glove
On top of her ladder she admires her new figurine
With its charming rendition of a homely and idyllic scene
But then she’s a goner when her balance fails
A goner, a glass flower, ornate and frail

Boy Crazy
01:46
|
|||
I’ve been living too long like a recluse
So when I get out of Georgia I’m gonna cut loose
Boy crazy
Fare thee well, all y’all rednecks
I’m gonna be the star of the discotheque
When the 808’s throbbing and the 303’s low
I’m gonna be the darling of the whole Castro
Boy crazy

Going Back to Greensboro
03:00
|
|||
I like the little things
See the woodland burst in brazen spring
Listen to the bluejay sing
Thank springtime for the gifts she brings
I really loved reading your letter
Just wanted you to know
Every day I’m getting better
Soon I’ll be back in Greensboro
There’s still work to do they say
I was hoping to come home in May
Still, everything up here’s okay
It’s a necessary delay
Tell Mama but don’t fret her
You know how she worries so
Every day I’m getting better
And I’m coming back to Greensboro
I don’t have a lot to do
Can’t believe how much I miss you two
Still, my outlook is completely new
Soon enough all this will be through

Impotent Rage
01:56
|
|||
Like a toddler, your impotent rage
Just grows louder and more demanding as you age
Little voice scream, fat fists swing
You know you'll never amount to anything
Pinned down in some miserable foxhole
Cleaning duty in the barracks of your soul
Never surrender, never die
Holding position, running out of supplies
All things made must be unmade
Brandishing your desperate spade
Feel the water in your blood rise
Exhausted limbs growing thinner all the time
And all the wisdom self-help books hold
And all the wisdom daytime TV family therapists know
Can't evict you if misery's your home
If you've grown to love being alone

Listen, Professor
01:28
|
|||
No, I don’t know when
But it’s been many years since then
Now I can’t say how
But it very well could happen right now
Listen, professor, this is no time for talking
In many ways you’re an admirable man but
The bow is bent, the candle is burning
Have you thought about where you stand?
You say I ought not preach during office hours
But I can’t let you fall into Satan’s power
I know what they say about pearls and swine
But I have to at least try for a dear mentor of mine
Listen, professor, you feel it don’t you?
You know something in your heart isn’t right
In class you rave over Sartre and Camus
I fear they’ll take you to someplace you don’t want to be
Listen, professor, deep down there’s something
Even now while you’re ushering me out
A part of you is aware the wheel is turning
Don’t you feel an iota of doubt?

El Hechizado

Nobody's impressed by the second-best dressed guy
Nobody puts stock in no-appointment walk-ins
The dull of every nation in short-to-tall configuration
Willing plummet like a tangent into the Atlantic
If you find yourself on the list with a number on your wrist
Please don't act like a martyr that just makes my job harder
Nature ain't what it used to be
Nature ain't what it used to be
There were higher cliffs and older trees
Oh nature ain't what it used to be
Every little boy's just a wind up toy
Every little girl's just an umbrella to twirl
Each bat of an eye was choreographed
Every fleeting glance we knew how long it would last
And if you try to say it was your spontaneous vision
I'll kick you out of my office with a scoff of derision
Nature ain't what it used to be
Nature ain't what it used to be
There were higher cliffs and older trees
Oh nature ain't what it used to be

A pretty boy is a transient joy
His appeal will quickly fade
Now I want more, like I've never seen before
One with eyes like a sharp piece of jade
Life is a bore, a tedious chore
So then I go looking for love
I won't make you guess. I'm willing to confess
I don't think it will be enough
Surprising kisses, eager promises
It's really not the end of time.

Saint Ursula

I've cut enough wood to build a home
I'll cut a little more to keep it warm
Planning for my pilgrimage to Rome
Hoping not to get caught in the storm
Carrying my traveling cloak
Packing oil and salt
Waiting for the cakes to soak
Waiting for the rain to halt
And all this multiplicity, the violence of the big city
It's weighing heavy on my mind 'cause I'm the simple kind
I know there are angels all around
And I'll be raised again
I anticipate the trumpet sound
Time alone says when
I am a meteorite shooting into the past
Great rate of motion, burning bright
Not made to last
The sacred land where pilgrims trod
'Cause Tennessee was made by God
Why's it so hard to find? Am I the changing kind?

Angry young man born with hammers for hands
Your soul is a punchline noone understands
Sad comedian, bitterness' best friend
Someone can open your heart up again
She's the most beautiful girl in the world
Most beautiful girl in the world
When she smiles you'll find life of a different kind
And she'll slowly begin to take over your mind
You don't feel so alone but your thoughts aren't your own
Can't you see how this usurper has grown?
She's the most beautiful girl in the world
Her laughter can quell the fires of hell
Most beautiful girl in the world
Has this gone too far? I don't know who you are
You're so remarkably gorgeous; everyone else is subpar
Could it be true? No, you aren't you
It's finally clear what this has come to
You're the most beautiful girl in the world
Your past life's a blur. You've turned into her
Most beautiful girl in the world

So Sad, So Lonely
03:28
|
|||
So sad, so lonely
There's no triad sad enough to show you how I feel
A minor ninth might come close but still wouldn't make it real
The whole thing's bolted badly and it's tearing itself loose
It's no use
Some were made for other people--I was made for things
You can have the wedding. I will take the ring
God gave some people willfulness. They're crying every night
I gave up the fight
Going to bed at seven, sleep 'til the afternoon
Nothing even gets close here, nothing's coming soon
Look at what my father's father's father's father did
He hid
